Perhaps I have studied slavery too much, but like abortion, it has grabbed my heart. It is not the issue to rally around, but the people impacted to have compassion for. I have many friends who have had abortions, drug users or dealers, or other vile things. It is not the issue that caused them the grief, but the people themselves that I have concern for. But when it comes to slavery it is not just them. When you pop an M&M in your mouth you are the direct beneficiary of abject slavery. I often walk by the plant that makes half of the M&Ms for the US and it disgusts me. But what do you do about it? I have made the proposal to “Seriously, Go Buy a Slave!” but that is for a limited few. Those limited few exist, such as some of the Yazidis that I have mentioned before. But now I found out about Oleg Melnikov, a young guy in Russia. I applaud his work as a man, not a wimp. There are some men who have both the physical stature and the mental fortitude to take on rather daunting challenges. Oleg seems to be one of them. Doing what he does puts him at risk and the video describes an attack on his life. But he hasn’t given up. Near the end of the video the attack is described, and then you see him with his family. He presses on and his family is with him. The line “His attacker is still walking free” hits home rather hard as the analogy is strong.
Do you know what it is like to be taken aside and informed you need to be a team player? Do you know what it is like to be physically threatened, once probably just sensationalism, and at least once not so? Do you know what it is like to blunder along the way but still strive to do things that are rather difficult, unpopular, but very loving? Do you know what it is like to be abandoned in the process? I do. |
