One of the things that is clear in Scripture is the idea to speak openly. We see a form of “parrhēsia”, which is literally to “utter all”, many times as a model for us. Thayer’s definition is clear: free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage, boldness, assurance. I hope you see in my emails an attempt to do just that. It does not mean that I free of error, nor that I am the authority, but rather there is a willingness to express what I understand, live by my understanding, and be willing to be corrected from Scripture. ... One of the things mentioned in previous emails was the concern of turning to man’s law and questioning if that is the place for the follower of Christ. It seems like if you were to take on that role you should have the ability to explain things clearly. That has not occurred in your emails. ... You have many options of how you will receive my previous emails and this one. You might find me someone who is trying to destroy you. You can ask another friend that I engage in serious dialog with about how often I mention “philoneikos”, which is seen in 1st Corinthians 11:16 typically as “contentious”. It is literally to triumph over a friend and something “we have no such practice”, nor do I strive for. Or perhaps you could see a brother who has invested already a lot of time in you to challenge you from Scripture as an act of love. There is what I often describe as fluffy Christianity. Perhaps some are truly redeemed, but only by the skin of their teeth. My guess from what I see in Scripture is most will be the ones saying “Lord, Lord, did we not … do many mighty works in your name?” (Matthew 7:22) Then there are those that understand that “In the world you will have tribulation” (John 16:33). So difficulties are no surprise, but our reaction to them shows our character. Is it me that holds me, or Christ? Please also know that I have decades of history in active ministry and involvement in politics. After being challenged from the Scripture, I have repented from political activity and can now rationally engage others from Scripture on the subject. Most simply run. But if you are one who is willing to go in depth with me, I am willing to spend the time with you. There are many ideas in Proverbs 27 and I hope you find this email as an attempt to live them: Verse 5 “Better is open rebuke than hidden love.” Verse 6 “Faithful are the wounds of a friend;” Verse 17 “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” |
